About Seva
Seva is service offered without expectation of return. At Sri Sri Radha Gopinath Mandir, every plate washed, every lamp lit and every guest welcomed becomes an offering to Krishna.
The meaning of seva
The word seva comes from Sanskrit and simply means service. In the bhakti tradition it carries a deeper sense: work performed as worship. The task itself may be ordinary — chopping vegetables, arranging shoes, guiding visitors — but the mood in which it is done transforms it into devotion.
“Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer or give away, and whatever austerities you perform — do that as an offering unto Me.”Bhagavad-gītā As It Is 9.27, translation by His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda, Founder-Ācārya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness.
Service as devotion
Devotional service is not limited to those with special training. A devotee who arranges flowers with attention and a devotee who leads kirtan are both engaged in bhakti. What matters is willingness, attentiveness and the desire to please the Lord and His devotees.
